There's no doubt that finding the perfect playlist can motivate and inspire you. Whether it's finishing the last mile of your run, tackling that laundry you've been putting off, or getting you through your workday, tunes can change everything. So let's motivate and inspire each other, shall we?
This is Brain Music: a selection of songs curated monthly by different members of the Rochester community that we hope will inspire you the same way it inspires its curator. Today, we bring you a playlist curated by sales and marketing consultant Talen Guzman. Without further ado, here's Brain Music Episode 35.
My name is Talen Guzman, and I am a business owner, millennial, sales specialist and independent consultant with roughly a decade of experience but lastly, and arguably most importantly, a dog lover! I have worn many hats, been called many names (mostly good!), and had an exceptional amount of experience working with people from coast to coast, but music has always followed me no matter where I went or what I did.
Whether it was doing homework as a child in Las Vegas, Nevada (where I grew up!) with a cheap mp3 player and headset on, or writing biographical blurbs about myself (this time, resident of the Gem on the Genesee) while the laptop blares music, there has always been sound and rhythm permeating my life.
Music has the ability to sway people’s mood with exceptional efficiency, decreasing cortisol (the stress hormone), and even raising pain thresholds – which may help those of you dealing with particularly difficult people at work! It can help people be taken to different places and, if you happen to be in a particularly downtrodden mood, it can take you to better places.
Growing up poor, I always seemed to have some kind of idea, plan or project ongoing that I hoped would make a positive impact on my family’s lives. As much today as it was back then, I still always seem to have something going on that I hope will make people’s lives better; consulting for different companies, playing some kind of sport, teaching the occasional class at Rochester Brainery, and (possibly hardest of all) trying to avoid stress eating during all of it! But music keeps me grounded, helps me remember where I came from, and nudges me towards the mood I need at the time.
As diverse as my daily responsibilities are, my music taste is just as diverse. My playlist can be considered a variety of “moods,” with rap, alternative, rock, funny, serious and some mixes of each. I hope that something on the playlist can serve to be as helpful for somebody else as some of the songs are for me.
