Saturday, October 7th | 10:30AM-12:30PM | Architecture in the Wild: Exploring Downtown's East Side

$29.00
Love old buildings but don’t know a Queen Anne from a Dutch Colonial? The Landmark Society’s Young Urban Preservationists (YUPs for short) are taking you out onto the streets to explore Rochester’s architectural history in its natural setting. In this 2-hour outdoor class, we’ll walk the east side of Downtown and learn the architectural styles of Rochester's commercial buildings; some basic architectural terminology; and how to approximately date the buildings you see every day.

Please note: This class is an active walking tour (approximately 1.5 to 2 miles on sidewalks and paved paths). Please wear appropriate clothes for the weather and walking shoes. If you’ve attended the Crash Course in American Architectural History classes, this is a great opportunity to put your new knowledge to the test out in the field; however, this class is also great for beginners.

Age:
This class is appropriate for ages 14+. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Please purchase one ticket for each person attending.

Location:
This class is a walking tour that starts the corner of Parcel 5, located at E. Main St. between Cortland St. and Andrew Langston Way. Please be aware of alternate side parking regulations and plan sufficient time for parking and walking to the meeting spot.

Accessibility:
If you would like to request a sign language interpreter or will be attending class with an aide, please fill out our contact form. Please also let us know if you have any preferences (vision access, etc).

About the teachers:
Instructors are members of the Young Urban Preservationists, an affiliate group of The Landmark Society of Western New York. The YUPs are an emerging generation of preservationists in the greater Rochester region dedicated to promoting inclusive, modern, and innovative preservation practices to help revitalize communities and our built environment. And we have fun doing it!
