Learn to create a metal bottle opener using the hot forging method. The class (held at Rochester Arc + Flame Center) will review the basic operations of creating a long taper by scrolling it and testing it. Once the bottle opener is finished, the student will complete the other end with a twist and/or a decorative finial as time permits. Because the class is designed to let students experience what it's like to work with hot steel, students will learn the basic operations of forging through a combination of lecture, demonstration and hands-on instruction with an anvil, hammer and tooling to give the bottle opener shape. A particular focus will be on the fundamentals of hammer control so students can get the steel to respond. Please note: No experience required. This is an interactive class that involves significant physical activity and heat. If this sounds like your idea of a great experience, we promise you an evening you'll remember for years to come! Please make sure to wear closed-toe sneakers or boots, jeans and a cotton t-shirt. Do not wear flip-flops, open-toe shoes or highly flammable clothing.
