Past personages of Charlotte – including an early 19th century daredevil, the local lighthouse’s first keeper, a War of 1812 schooner captain, an industrial accident victim, a humbled ‘49er, and families that share names with several local roads – come to life through their gravestones as we explore this early, and often overlooked, burial ground. Students will leave prepared to read the stories of their own communities in local cemeteries, and to appreciate the eternal – even spooky! – presence of the past in our lives.
Please note: This field trip will not require walking any significant distances, but the grass-covered ground of the cemetery is uneven in some places, and you should expect to be on your feet for the duration of the class. You are also encouraged to bring your own personal water bottles to stay hydrated.
Age:
This class is appropriate for ages 14+. Anyone under the age of 18 must attend with a parent or guardian. Please purchase one ticket per person attending.
Location:
This class will begin on the sidewalk in front of Charlotte Cemetery, 28 River Street, in the
Charlotte neighborhood of Rochester. Parking is available on River Street, both directly across from the cemetery, and along the length of River Street as posted; do not park in the Charlotte Harborview apartment complex’s lot adjacent to the cemetery, as it is reserved for tenants.
