Suminagashi marbling is an ancient Japanese art form which combines the practice of working with calm water and sumi ink to create deliberate patterns. Unlike western marbling, which uses a sizing agent to thicken the water as a base and relies on the use of color, Suminagashi relies simply on the tensile strength of water and is traditionally carried out in black and white scale. The technique teaches patience and calm deliberation in placing the inks and allowing them to spread and merge, by interjecting intentional patterns only after the inks have spread over the surface of the water. This results in a perfect mindfulness exercise of clean, crisp, modern patterning. In this class, we’ll use traditional brushes and explore different inks to create patterns on fine Habotai silk.
