Brain Music Episode 17: Heather Swenson

Brain Music Episode 17: Heather Swenson

There's no doubt that finding the perfect playlist can motivate and inspire you. Whether it's finishing the last mile of your run, tackling that laundry you've been putting off, or getting you through your workday, tunes can change everything. So let's motivate and inspire each other, shall we?

This is Brain Music: a selection of songs curated monthly by different members of the Rochester community that we hope will inspire you the same way it inspires its curator.

Today we bring you a playlist from Heather Swenson, one of the four artists featured in our Gallery Room until the end of February. Without further ado, Brain Music Episode 17:

Hi. My name is Heather Swenson, I am a multidisciplinary artist working in silkscreen, sculpture, installation and collage. I have a studio in the Hungerford Building where I work on my prints and spend a lot of time building small structures out dowels and paper.

Music makes me feel like everything is okay, it gives me energy and motivation. I alternate between periods of listening to podcasts and music while working at my studio. Sometimes working to music distracts me though, I get caught up with singing and dancing instead of working! But It always feels like time well spent, it allows me to take a break, connect with my body for a bit and just really experience what I’m listening to.

It helps me to take a step back from what I’m working on, especially if I’m feeling indecisive about a piece. I have always wanted to play music or be in a band, but self-doubt and worries have made that very difficult so far. For a long time singing alone in my car or studio has been enough, but it’s starting to feel like an itch that needs more attention.

I’m slowly starting to play guitar again and trying to get comfortable singing around people. So hopefully with some more time and patience making music will coexist with my studio practice. I hope you enjoy this playlist, it was really difficult to narrow it down to only an hour of music!
