  • How long do classes usually run?

We typically hold classes that run between 1 to 3 hours, but are open to different time-frames to best suit your class.

  • Are teachers paid?

Yes! Typically, teachers are paid starting at $5 per ticket sold in their class. We also reimburse for any class supplies purchased for the class.

  • What if I cannot make it to my class?

Once we book your class, it goes onto our website so people can start purchasing seats. Therefore, it is important that you make it to the class you’ve scheduled. Teachers who cancel classes without a minimum of 48 hours notice, or without providing an alternate teacher who can teach on their behalf, may not be invited back to teach at Rochester Brainery. Teaching a class is a commitment, and we don’t want to let our students down.

  • How do I purchase a seat in a class?

You can purchase a seat online or in-store. We do recommend purchasing your tickets in advance. That being said, walk-in's are welcome to some classes unless a class is previously sold out or there aren't enough supplies prepared. If you are planning to walk-in, we suggest calling ahead to make sure we can accommodate another student.

  • How do I request sign language interpretation for a specific class?

It’s easy! We work with a number of student and professional volunteer interpreters. Just email us at at least 48 hours in advance with the class you’d like interpretation services for and we will book a sign language interpreter for that class for free.

  • What if I purchase a seat in a class but end up not being able to make it?

Class ticket purchases are non-refundable or exchangeable for any reason. This is because our teachers purchase materials and plan for their classes based on the number of students registered. However, if you’d like to offer your seat in that class to a friend or family member, we’d be happy to let them take your seat. We ask that you please call us ahead of time or email us at by noon on the day of the class to let us know.

  • What is your cancellation and bad weather policy?

Rochester Brainery may cancel a class for extreme weather conditions (i.e. if there is a warning to not be on the roads), in the case of an emergency, if there not enough seats purchased to cover running the class (we have a 6 seat minimum for on-site classes and an 8 seat minimum for off-site classes), or in the event that a teacher is unable to make the class. We will try to reschedule the class on the same day of the week, and the same scheduled time, as soon as we can. If you cannot make the rescheduled date, we will make an exception, and refund you the price of your seat.

Please note: In regards to our weather policy, we are located in Monroe County in the City of Rochester. While we understand and truly appreciate (very much!) that sometimes students travel from all over for our classes, we do make cancellation decisions based on the weather where we are located. To do this, we look at if Rochester City Schools are closing early or have cancelled after-school activities, and what other businesses that host timed events (like a gym or theater), have cancelled as well.

  • What is your discount policy?

Often times throughout the year we run promotions on classes and gift cards. These promotions are only valid for purchases during the time the promotion is running and cannot be applied after the fact. If you missed a deal, we apologize- but we promise that another is just around the corner! Discounts cannot be used in combination with other discounts.

  • What is your gift card policy?

Our gift cards never expire and can be used towards the purchase of any class or retail items in our shop. Gift cards cannot be used towards space rental payments.

  • Can I bring alcohol (beer, wine, etc.) to class?

Unfortunately not. As New York State law states, since we do not a carry a liquor license BYOB is not permitted. Under this law, we are also not allowed to give away alcoholic beverages to students. If you are looking to rent our space, a temporary permit may be obtained by a caterer, and we are happy to chat more with you about that here.

  • I’d like to give you feedback about the class I took.

Please do! Your feedback is extremely important to us. Please e-mail us at

  • How old do I have to be to attend a class?

It depends! The age minimum for a class is set by the teacher of the class and in some cases, like classes that involve alcohol, the law. For example, only those 21+ can attend our cocktail making classes, while someone as young as 12 may be able to attend a calligraphy class. Age restrictions are noted within each class description.

  • How many tickets should I purchase?

Students should purchase one ticket per person planning to attend a class unless otherwise noted in the description. The exception to this rule is someone who requires the assistance of an aid. In this case, an aid is welcome to attend without purchasing an additional ticket, although we do ask that we be notified (please hyperlink to the contact page) so we can ensure the room is arranged to best accommodate everyone in attendance.
