Ready to silence your inner critic and play with color? Unlike painting a portrait or a landscape, abstract art is about capturing a feeling, a thought, or something you can't quite put into words. This class will show you how, whether you've never touched a brush or just want to deepen your practice. Through a fun, repeatable process, you'll choose your own color palette, build a composition, and experiment with mixed media—with a deck of playful "cheat codes" to spark your creativity whenever you get stuck. There's no wrong way to make abstract art, and you'll leave with proof: a finished acrylic painting on canvas, ready to hang, all materials included, and a creative process that turns a blank canvas from intimidating to exciting.
This class is appropriate for ages 18+.
This class will take place at Arc + Flame Center, located at 125 Fedex Way, Rochester, NY 14624.
If you would like to request a sign language interpreter, will be attending class with an aide, or have any preferences (seating, vision access, etc), please fill out our contact form.
Class ticket purchases are non-refundable for any reason. A transfer into a different class of equal or greater value may be granted if requested at least 72 hours prior to the class date. Students are always welcome to have someone attend in their place, too!
While we know this is not always ideal, as a small business this is the only way we can ensure our teachers are paid for their time and supplies and our venues are paid rent for their space. We appreciate your support!

Meet the Teacher
William Rivera-Bloodworth is a Rochester-based abstract artist and graphic designer who picked up a paintbrush during the pandemic and hasn't stopped since. An active member of the Rochester arts community, his work can be found at local shops, galleries, and art markets around the city. A trained classroom teacher, he has a gift for making even the most intimidating concepts feel approachable. He fell in love with abstract art because it could express what nothing else could, and nothing makes him happier than helping others discover that for themselves. Learn more at his website.
