Past personages of Charlotte โ including an early 19th century daredevil, the local lighthouseโs first keeper, a War of 1812 schooner captain, an industrial accident victim, a humbled โ49er, and families that share names with several local roads โ come to life through their gravestones as we explore this early, and often overlooked, burial ground. Students will leave prepared to read the stories of their own communities in local cemeteries, and to appreciate the eternal โ even spooky! โ presence of the past in our lives.
Please note:ย A rain date for this class is scheduled for Sunday, November 1st from 11:00am-12:30pm. Students registering for this class must also be available for the rain date, and will be automatically transferred if weather prohibits class on October 31st. Refunds or exchanges will not be given if students are unable to make the rain date.
This field trip will not require walking any significant distances, but the grass-covered ground of the cemetery is uneven in some places, and you should expect to be on your feet for the duration of the class. You are also encouraged to bring your own personal water bottles to stay hydrated.
This class is appropriate for ages 14+. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Please purchase one ticket for each person attending.
This class will begin on the sidewalk in front of Charlotte Cemetery, located at 28 River Street, Rochester, NY 14612, in the Charlotte neighborhood of Rochester. Parking is available on River Street, both directly across from the cemetery, and along the length of River Street as posted; do not park in the Charlotte Harborview apartment complexโs lot adjacent to the cemetery, as it is reserved for tenants.
If you would like to request a sign language interpreter, will be attending class with an aide, or have any preferences (seating, vision access, etc), please fill out our contact form.
Class ticket purchases are non-refundable for any reason. A transfer into a different class of equal or greater value may be granted if requested at least 72 hours prior to the class date. Students are always welcome to have someone attend in their place, too!
While we know this is not always ideal, as a small business this is the only way we can ensure our teachers are paid for their time and supplies and our venues are paid rent for their space. We appreciate your support!
